Et Tu, Art Brute?

Andrew Edlin Gallery is pleased to announce a new project, Et Tu, Art Brute?, which will be on view in their underground space. Mara's art piece "Looking After Her Younger Sibling" will be exhibited among a diverse group of artists from various backgrounds and abilities.

What is the definition of an artist today? How does it feel to make art? Who is allowed to participate and on what terms? These are some of the questions that Et Tu, Art Brute? explores. Through this show they want to expand the parameters of who can be a part of the art world, who can be called an artist, and how art articulates one’s agency in the world.

Opening reception, November 17th, 6-8pm

Location: Lyndon Baines Johnson Education Building Auditorium
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Avenue, SW
Washington, D.C. 20202

Description: VSA, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, proudly presents UBUNTU: Yo Soy...Je Suis….I Am…Because You Are, a one-of a kind display of artwork by student-artists with disabilities from the United States and around the globe.

This year’s theme shows us that through shared art experiences, our humanity becomes bound in the humanity of those around us. In Southern Africa this concept is called Ubuntu: a word that means “human-ness” or “humanity towards others.” Colloquially, this philosophy translates to I am because you are. My humanity is connected to yours.
